Emerald Glen Girls Circle Celebrate with Awards and Poetry Slam

On Tuesday, March 27, 2012, the Emerald Glen Apartment Girls Circle participated in a poetry slam with a microphone in front of an audience including Janae Littlejohn, the National Plus Teen USA Ambassador. All the girls shared a piece that they wrote or something that struck a chord inside of them. The mic brought something out of them, a certain energy and strength. They all clapped after a reading. They also got to ask questions to Janae and hear her spoken word poetry too.

After the poetry slam, AmeriCorps members, Aisha Upton & Frankie Lee, gave out 9 awards for perfect attendance for Winter season and 3 special awards granted to girls that struck a chord with the Girls Circle Philosophy: Helping Hands, Respectful Leader and GC Warrior.  Everyone shared bubble gum and took fun snap shots with Janae before ending this fun evening.

Great job EG Girls!

Homeport has grown to call many places “Our Home” over 25 years.

In 1987, Columbus Housing Partnership (CHP) was formed to bring the community together in addressing the affordable housing needs of the city. CHP settled at 1465 East Broad Street in our first home and grew quickly to 13 staff members. After only a few years, we moved across town to 610 Neil Avenue into an existing United Methodist church. There, we were able to utilize office space during the week, while the church held services on the weekends.

With 14 employees and looking toward future expansion, CHP once again searched for a home and moved to our present location at 562 East Main Street. As our services expanded into neighborhood revitalization in 2008, Homeport was born out of the need to have a presence furthering these efforts in the King Lincoln District. An office at 736 East Long Street was opened soon after the KLD’s Gateway Building was ready. Continuos expansion of our Homeport programs meant our staff size had to follow suit. By 2010, our Main Street office was bursting at the seams with 55 staff members. This necessitated the need to move our accounting and Rental Living departments to the ground floor of our Stoddart Studios on South Fourth Street.

Our growth over the past 25 years has led us to various homes, and no matter where we call “Our Home” in the future, our mission of Building Vibrant Communities is sure to follow.

25 years later, Banc One is still supporting Homeport as JPMorgan Chase

Just like Homeport started out with a different identity a la Columbus Housing Partnership, so too did JPMorgan Chase. In 1988, Banc One Corp. provided the capital to create one of our first developments in the South of Main area. Ten years later, Banc One merged to become Bank One of Ohio.

As the 90s came to a close, Homeport looked to Chicago-based Federal Home Loan Bank for financing. With this relationship established, JPMorgan Chase was brought into the funding fold. In 2004, Bank One of Ohio merged with JPMorgan Chase, thus providing a link between the local and regional connections.

Those roots are still strong twenty five years later – as JPMorgan Chase continues to support not only our physical developments but our community outreach efforts as well. This year, JPMorgan Chase has underwritten our My Home events, allowing us to spread our message to more people. And in the last 12 years alone, JPMorgan Chase has provided 33.5 million dollars in funding for seven developments including:

Our partnership with JPMorgan Chase has grown immensely in the last quarter century, and  we look forward to continuing our relationship far into the future.
